The Intrauterine Device (IUD) in Sweden: Reproductive technology in action, ca. 1963-1970
This seminar examines the early uses of modern IUDs in Sweden.
How did IUDs shift from abortive to contraceptive? And what were the impacts of this transition? This presentation examines how IUDs disrupted medical practices, reproductive discourses, and personal family planning efforts. I argue that IUD use impacted how historical and modern understandings of reproduction have been constructed in Sweden.

About the presenter: Morag Ramsey is a researcher at the department of history of science and ideas, at Uppsala University. Her current project "Between life and death: intrauterine device (IUD) use in Sweden, ca. 1960-1975," is financially supported by Riksbankens Jubileumsfond. Her PhD dissertation focused on the development of Swedish abortion pills. Generally, Morag is interested in reproductive technologies, colonial experiences, infertility, environmental history, the history of medicine, and Science and Technology Studies.
