GEXcel started in 2007 as a two-university GEXcel: Centre of Gender Excellence(LiU and ORU), funded by the Swedish Research Council, and continued in 2013 as GEXcel International Collegium for Advanced Transdisciplinary Gender Studies, a three-university gender research platform of Linköping, Karlstad and Örebro Universities.
