Virtual workshop: Racism, anti-racism, and the EU Institutions
The first of the 2022 EUGenDem virtual workshops on ‘Gender, democracy, and polarized politics in Europe’ will be a session on ‘Racism, anti-racism, and the EU Institutions’.
There is a notable gap in academic literature on studying racism within the EU institutions. In this workshop, we scrutinise the EU’s record in tackling racism within its own institutions. The current European Commission says that it is working towards a “Union of Equality” with action plans proposing to promote gender equality, anti-racism, Roma rights, LGBTQI rights, and rights of persons with disabilities. In this context, the Commission also presented its first ever Anti-Racism Action Plan in 2020. This online workshop looks at these developments with contributions from the recently appointed anti-racism co-ordinator of the EU, Michaela Moua, and a research paper on racism in the European Parliament.

Chair: Johanna Kantola (Tampere University, Finland)

Speakers:

Michaela Moua (European Commission Coordinator for Anti-racism): European Commission’s Anti-Racism Action Plan for 2020–2025

Petra Ahrens, Valentine Berthet, Anna Elomäki, Barbara Gaweda, Johanna Kantola, and Cherry Miller (Tampere University, Finland): Racism in the European Parliament
