Our EUGenDem workshop sessions on Gender, democracy and polarised politics in Europe continue on 5 May 2021 with a session on ‘Gender and politics in Covid-19 crisis: Including a gender perspective in responses and recovery’.

The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated existing gender inequalities in multiple ways and highlighted the fragile foundations of gender equality policies. Yet the policy response to the pandemic has mostly been gender-blind. The papers of the workshop look at the policies as well as the decision-making practices through which different countries have reacted to the pandemic and the ensuing economic crisis, assessing the gender sensitiveness of the policy responses and the ability of feminist voices to influence the outcome.

Chair: Sarah Childs (Royal Holloway, University of London, UK)

Speakers:

Jennifer Piscopo (Occidental College, USA): Entry Points, Activists, and Femocrats: Gendering COVID-19 Response and Recovery

Anna Elomäki and Johanna Kantola (Tampere University, Finland): Feminist governance in the European Parliament: The political struggle over the inclusion of gender in the EU’s Covid-19 response

Pauline Cullen (Maynooth University, Ireland): Responses to the COVID‐19 crisis in Ireland: From feminized to feminist (co-authoring with Mary P. Murphy, Maynooth University Ireland)
