Understanding Opposition to Feminist Politics and Gender Equality in Europe
Welcome to the Centre for Feminist Social Studies’ Public lecture and discussion on antifeminism and feminism in Europe.
Understanding Opposition to Feminist Politics and Gender Equality in Europe by Professor Mieke Verloo, Radboud University, Netherlands.

The lecture is followed by a discussion with Dr Malin Holm, Uppsala University and Senior Professor Jeff Hearn, Örebro University.

In contrast to the wealth of studies on progress towards gender equality, opposition to gender equality is rarely studied. This makes it difficult to understand the positive and negative dynamics of gender equality as a political project. In this open lecture, professor Verloo sets the agenda for future research, useful for students and scholars of gender and politics, social movements, European integration, and policy
studies, as well as for high-level policymakers, students, and feminist activists alike. The aim is to be an inspiration to thinkers, doers, scholars and political actors.

Mieke Verloo is Professor of Comparative Politics and Inequality Issues at Radboud University in the Netherlands, and Non-Residential Permanent Fellow at the IWM, Institute for Human Sciences in Vienna. She has extensive training experience on gender mainstreaming and intersectionality for several European governments and institutions. She is the editor of Varieties of Opposition to Gender Equality in Europe (Routledge 2018). Her recent work is on the complex relationship between democracy and gender+ equality, and on gendered body politics.
