The Body in Ecstasy: Possession and Intoxication, 5 hp (Autumn 2017)
This course is offered as a part of the Doctoral School in the Humanities by the Department of Ethnology, History of Religion and Gender Studies in collaboration with the Department of Archaeology and Classical Studies and the Department of History. The course takes place in the second half of autumn 2017. Free spaces on the course are available.
This course examines a variety of liminal bodily states and ecstatic borderlands, including intoxication, trance, sexual rites, and shamanistic practices in different cultures. The course focuses on cultural expression and praxis, starting from central theoretical concepts such as ritual, liminality, performance and performativity.
