The Body in Theory and Practice, 7.5 ECTS
Forskerkurs
Dato: 18.03.2019 - 12.04.2019  Tid:
Sted: Stockholm, Sverige
The Department of Ethnology, History of Religions and Gender studies offers this course as part of the Doctoral School in the Humanities in the spring semester 2019.
COURSE CONTENT
We are, and possess, a body. We therefore have theories on corporeality that are about both being and doing. The question of being can be said to start ‘from within’ and touches on research fields such as phenomenology and psychoanalysis, while the question of doing instead starts ‘from the outside’ and rather relates to semiotics and ideology criticism.

The course will, however, seek to problematize this division, as achieved previously with the historic division of body and mind, and attempt to exceed it, by focusing on theoretical terms such as process, liminality, performativity, and the living body, as well as going into depth on more recent theories such as posthumanism and Crip Theory.

The gender perspective will be prominent throughout the course which in addition to the faculty framework will be given in collaboration with the Gender Academy. Various aspects of the gendered body in relation to theory and practice will be central in discussions on trans*, functionality, materiality and the relationship to the Other.

LEARNING OUTCOMES
In order to pass the course, students are expected to be able to:

• distinguish and review various theories on the body and its relation to the self, society and nature
• describe the research position, and discuss and critically reflect on definitions, limitations and issues
• explain and critically discuss their own theory application from an interdisciplinary viewpoint, critically discuss terms such as process, liminality, performativity, and the living body
• explain and critically discuss recent theories such as posthumanism and Crip Theory.
