Queerseminarium: Trans and Sex Change in Contemporary Iran:A Socio-legal Study of Gendered Policies and Practices
Zara Saeidzadeh completed her doctoral degree in Gender Studies at Örebro University in 2020. In her doctoral thesis, she examines the lives of trans people who undergo sex-change surgery in Iran from a socio-legal perspective. She now teaches and works as a researcher in Gender Studies at Örebro University. She is also a research associate at Simone de Beauvoir Institute, Concord.
Zarah Saeidazeh about the seminar:
“In my thesis, I investigate sex change among trans men and trans women who reconstruct their body and who define their gender differently from that which was assigned to them at birth. I explore the ‘legality’ and ‘illegality’ of sex change under shi’a Islamic jurisprudence and examine how its interplay with the medical and legal system, as well as with the judiciary, affects the lives of trans people in Iran. Thus, I aim to shed light on the complexities of sex change under Iranian and Islamic legal systems while I elaborate on the experiences of trans people who live out intricate and complex selves in the context of Iranian society.”
