Speakers:

Dr. Virpi Timonen holds a doctorate from the University of Oxford and is Professor in Social Policy and Ageing at the School of Social Work and Social Policy in Trinity College Dublin. Her research focuses on intergenerational relationships, roles in old age, and policy pertaining to older adults, but she also has an interest in the entire life course, in the context of intergenerational family relations (e.g. grandparenthood). She has extensive experience of working in inter-disciplinary contexts, as illustrated through her work with colleagues in TILDA (the Irish Longitudinal Study of Ageing) and in a project trained at mapping out optimal care for people with motor neurone disease. Virpi has published over 60 peer-reviewed articles and chapters in books by major academic publishers. The journals she has published in include the Journal of Aging Studies, Social Science & Medicine, Ageing & Society, Family Relations, Health Services Research, Research on Aging, Palliative Medicine, and The Gerontologist, among others. She has authored five books including the international textbook Ageing Societies: A Comparative Introduction; and co-edited Contemporary Grandparenting, the first book on grandparenting in global contexts. In 2014-2018, she serves as the elected President of the Research Committee on the Sociology of Ageing (RC11) of the International Sociological Association, the largest global scholarly organisation of social gerontologists. She is also an elected Fellow of Trinity College Dublin, and Adjunct Professor at the University of Jyväskylä, Finland.


Dr. Toni Calasanti is Professor of Sociology at Virginia Tech, VA, USA. Her research has focused on inequalities in old age as well as intersections of gender, sexuality and age in relation to care work, retirement, anti ageing industry and health. Her current work concerns LGBT issues in later life, particularly regarding care work, bodies and health. She is also co-editor of Social Currents.
