Title: Workshop on Postcolonial Theories and the Nordic Region

Time: 2.3.2015–16.4.2015 (1 ECT)

Organizers: ESC-research seminar in collaboration with Doctoral Programme of School, Education, Society and Culture (SEDUCE), AGORA for the Study of Social Justice and Equality -Research Centre and Nordic Centre of Excellence Justice through Education in the Nordic Countries (JustEd).

To whom: SEDUCE PhD students and everyone interested max. 20 participants.

Language: All languages are welcome. Texts are in English.

Description: Postcolonial studies constitute diverse and contested field of research and the usefulness of postcolonial theories in Nordic region has raised discussions. Nordic countries are marked culturally, historically and economically by colonial relations.
Colonialism shapes the possibilities of thinking the society and its structures. In this workshop we will concentrate on concepts of ‘postcolonialism’, ‘racialization’, ’whiteness’, ‘decolonialization’
and ‘multiculturalism’ and reflect their use in Nordic context.

Structure:

Mon 2.3.2015 at 13–15 a meeting at Siltavuorenpenger, Helsinki.

Study circle(s): 2.3.2015–15.4.2015, all together four meetings with assigned readings.

Literature for the study circle(s) will be announced later.

Workshop: 16.4.2015 from 10 to 16 a workshop-day on Postcolonial Theories and the Nordic Region with Salla Tuori at Siltavuorenpenger, Helsinki. In the workshop we will discuss about questions and themes that have occurred in the study circle(s).
